Client: Port of Ventspils
Project completion period: 2019.-2021.
Project description: In 2021, the construction works in the Freeport of Ventspils – the restoration of the largest hydraulic structure of the port – the North Pier were completed. Thus, the restoration of both Ventspils piers, which form the sea gate, has been completed. Construction works on the restoration of the South Pier started on 26.01.2018 and were finished on 25.08.2018. In the restoration of the pier, monolithic concrete walls were built, and 1,500 tetrapods were used there. In turn, the construction works of the North Pier started on 17.04.2019 and the facility was put into operation on 26.02.2021. More than 3,000 tetrapods have been used in its restoration, steel corrugated walls have been built, and works have been carried out to make the body of the pier monolithic. The North Pier is one of the most strategically important hydraulic structures of the port. The pier is a one-and-a-half-kilometre long structure that extends from the land into the sea and protects the harbour from waves, ice and sand drifts. Unlike the South Pier, the North Pier additionally fulfils industrial functions, as important utility lines are installed there, which serve for loading ships. The task of both piers is to ensure safe navigation conditions for ships leaving and entering the port. In the competition “Latvian Construction of the Year Award 2021”, the North Pier won the 1st place in the nomination “Engineering Structure – Reconstruction”.
